Denver, CO – July 24, 2014 — Brekhus Tile & Stone is proud to showcase its work replacing the historical marble cladding at the Grand Opening of Union Station this Saturday, July 26th. Beginning the job in December of 2013, the local Denver company has completed the complex project on time, in addition to meeting a special contract requirement that an original 100 year-old system be used to hang the 200 lb. marble slabs. “The developers wanted the restoration as close to the original as possible” says Brekhus project manager Kevin Arnold, “so the project would come together seamlessly.” Arnold says the old method that was used in building Union Station – hanging each marble slab with copper wire and anchoring it with plaster – is still the best method for covering old brick.
Brekhus Tile & Stone first had to remove the original marble cladding, which came from Marble, CO, and transport it to the company warehouse. Marble, CO supplies stone that is recognized as among the best in the world because of its purity and shiny white surface. Both the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C feature the distinctive Colorado marble.
In Union Station this year, after other construction crews had created new doorways for stores and restaurants, Brekhus Tile came back to replace the marble cladding and decorative molding. Wherever possible, the old marble went back in its original place, and in some areas new marble was added. “I’m really interested in the history,” said Arnold. “It’s amazing that we were able to match 100 year-old marble from this quarry perfectly. It also makes me think how hard it must have been to accomplish this job a century ago without the power tools we have now. Because, this type of project still isn’t that easy to do now.”
Company founder Jeff Brekhus says he’s grateful for the original vision of Dana Crawford, whose belief in historic preservation was the catalyst for developing the neoclassical landmark building. “Without her determination, this complex project with so many players and moving parts never would have come about. We also owe huge thanks to Milender White Construction for selecting us to do this job, and giving us the chance to be part of such a talented team.”
Union Station is owned by RTD and will continue to serve its original purpose as a bona fide transportation hub, which will now include buses, trains and light rail. As of the July 26th Grand Opening, it will also be fully operational in its mixed use role. Union Station will boast the 112-room luxury Crawford hotel – named in honor of Dana Crawford – restaurants staffed by some of Denver’s finest chefs, and several chic bars. Now that there are pedestrian walkways all the way to the Highlands neighborhood, Union Station could become something of Denver nexus, with an ongoing agenda of community concerts and events to tempt anyone on their way downtown.
